COMPOSITION

Music, being as abstract as it is, hard to approach, hard to recall, offers unlimited possibilities to combine and to create.
 

My initial compositional ideas could at times be as well rhythmical, geometrical, melodical, harmonical, scientific (like permutations or applying self made systems to my music) or simply emotional. I always try to write music that I have not heard yet, but would like to listen to.

BIOGRAPHY & MUSICAL UPBRINGING

Starting to write music around the age of ten, I have written for numerous lineups for the years, from solo-pieces to big band music, from small electronical combos to large string ensembles, I have written and arranged for numerous bands in the past.

My musical journey began at my birth, being born into a family of musicians, I wanted to learn piano by the age of two and started lessons. At the age of nine I picked up guitar and trombone, broadening my understanding of music: After I played not only piano to help me with understanding harmony, but also entered the world of wind and stringed instruments.

Studies in musicology and philosophy at the Universität Bern (CH) with the bachelor degree let as well my musical as philosophical thoughts spin wild, and put my further studies on as well solid as always questioned and therefore unstable grounds. The will to express my thoughts and ideas all through music, only got more certain during this period. I then started studying jazz trombone in Bern (CH) at the Hochschule der Künste HKB with Bernhard Bamert, where I professionalised my skills on tenor and bass trombone. During that time I also started to play sousaphone. During the studies in composition and arrangement in Jazz with Frank Sikora, Django Bates und Christoph Baumann, I also got more into electronic music, and extended my studies to the ZhdK in Zürich in Computermusik-classes. I also studied a semestre at the Jazzinstitut of the Universität der Künste, Berlin with Geoffroy Demasure (trombone) and Jörg Achim Keller (composition). During this time, I developed a broad range of music of which most to this point has not been performed yet and waits for an opportunity.

My own projects include Polyhedron, a jazz quartet I founded during my time at the jazz school such as CHINZILLA, a more electronic combo first consisting of three musicians that merged into a solo project, sometimes joined by drummer Jim Black as EmC Splinter. The newest ensemble I founded, that only plays music I have written is the international dectet LAVA BEAM.

In June 2020 I founded the label RANUNKEL RECORDS, through which I have released most of my own compositions, so far.

OWN PROJECTS

My own projects include Polyhedron, a jazz quartet I founded during my time at the jazz school such as CHINZILLA, a more electronic combo first consisting of three musicians that merged into a solo project, sometimes joined by drummer Jim Black as EmC Splinter. The newest ensemble I founded, that only plays music I have written is the international dectet LAVA BEAM.

EXTERNAL WORKS | COMMISSIONS

Besides my own groups, music I have written music for the following ensembles (amongst others): Fanfare Balkanique Illimitée - FBI, Brassmaster Flash, Frauen-Jazz-Orchester Tirol, Uptown Big Band.


Commissions for 67-piece school orchestra and a band of 100 young cello and bass players, as well as arrangements for numerous bands that I have played in or performed with, from experimental jazz to rock to pop to reggae to hip-hop.
